Discovery Pattern Design

ServiceNow CIS-Discovery Study Guide

Overview

Discovery patterns are reusable templates that define how Discovery collects data from devices. The Pattern Designer allows you to create, debug, and manage patterns for both horizontal (infrastructure) and application discovery.

Why It Matters for the Exam

Pattern Design is 35% of the CIS-Discovery exam. Expect questions on Pattern Designer operations, parsing strategies, variable syntax, regex, and the difference between horizontal and application patterns.

Key Concepts to Master

1Pattern Designer interface and debugging
2Horizontal vs Application patterns
3Pattern operations (Match, Parse variable, Parse file)
4Variable and attribute syntax
5Regular expressions in patterns
6Application identification sections
7Process identifiers (PIDs)
8Pattern troubleshooting with Discovery Log

💡 Exam Tips & Strategy

Remember that horizontal patterns use PIDs while top-down (Service Mapping) patterns use entry points. Know how to use Debug Mode and understand the HorizontalDiscoveryProbe. Application patterns require a corresponding CI type and classification.
